Terram and Typar geosynthetics act to provide one or more of the recognised functions for this genre:

The most common is combined filtration/separation in highway and rail track construction.
The textile is placed on top of the gound and is then covered with a layer of stone (highways) or ballast (railways). The textile must allow water to pass in both directions whilst ensuring the soil and stone do not intermix. This would cause the whole structure to fail.
