Fiberweb Hygiene/ Medical Americas Announces Restructuring at its Bethune, SC Facility
5 February 2007
Fiberweb disclosed today that it has notified customers of its intention to cease operation of two older carded thermal bond lines at the Bethune, SC facility.
Specifically, the two thermal bond lines will have their operating schedules cut back immediately and, unless developments dictate otherwise, shut down by December 31, 2007. Because the fabrics made on this equipment are medically related and replacements have long qualification periods, Fiberweb decided to alert customers of its intentions with over a year’s notice. While unlikely, new developments over the year could alter this decision.
The proposed contraction of operations of older lines is consistent with Fiberweb’s move last year to close 4 lines in two other US plants and focus resources on a more sustainable asset base.
Through various ownerships, the Bethune carded thermal bond lines have supplied Novonette® nonwoven fabrics to the medical and wipes markets for over 40 years. Approximately 43 employees, both salaried and hourly, are affected and will receive outplacement assistance.
The Bethune site will continue to manufacture a broad range of nonwoven fabrics including spunlace, caustic entangled carded cotton, and nonwoven composites for use in consumer wipes, industrial wipes, and medical applications.
Fiberweb is a world leader in the design and manufacture of tailored nonwoven fabric solutions. Enjoying global reach from its 24 manufacturing sites in 14 countries across the globe, Fiberweb employs the widest range of nonwoven production and treatment technologies to meet demanding customer requirements for service, quality, and flexibility. Fiberweb specializes in the development of innovative products, both independently and in collaboration with customers.
